Communication in Social Care - As Foster Carers

It's important to understand we all have, as adults our own values and opinions around the children we care for, that however shouldn't stop us from all doing our jobs to the highest standard!

We are here on Earth to do Gods work, but often it's over looked and it just becomes a tick box exercise and a way to save money.

As carers we are highly undervalued, unappreciated and overlooked. Yet without us, social workers couldn't do their jobs. So how do we bridge the 'professionals' gap? How can we as carers become seen to be more than glorified baby sitters?
There are high expectations placed on us, often expectations that go unspoken and get held against us.

At Fostering Kingdoms we want our carers to not only know Gods word but implement it into their lives, but also implement a new way of communicating with the social care sector. Often the hardest part about doing our jobs is working with other adults, but when we can get control over our own emotions and show up consistently with confidence we can begin to make changes.
All be it small to begin with, we can be the change we desire to see.

In any relationship it only takes one person to change the relationship, to destroy it or bring it back to life. We hold the power to bring life into the team around a child.

Our words matter, our words have impact, but we need to remove the emotion from our input so create a new dynamic.

Social workers can feel like foster carers are not 'professional' so it becomes our duty to improve on ourselves, our environment and ultimately treat the relationships with social care workers as professional work colleagues and forming new ways to communicate to them. They are not our enemy, even when it feels like we are in battle, we must redirect our energy, pray for them and then work on the things in our control - such as our personal development.

    Matthew 5:44
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you

Jesus tells us to love them, to pray for them. He commands us to be the change - change your words over the way people are with you, the people you must work with, the children and adults.

Your communication skills have a huge impact over your professional relationships and over how you run your home - You can check out our course on Communication here.
